Insidious The Last Key is a 2017 American horror-mystery thriller film directed by Adam Robitel and written by Leigh Whannell.

One of the big tag lines of the original Insidious was “it’s not the house that’s haunted”. For the new one, it certainly seems to be the case, though as Lin Shaye’s veteran spook investigator will discover, it’s also a very personal case. Watch the first trailer for Insidious: The Last Key.

Though you might have thought that the series had seen its last entry after the third, think again! Successful horror franchises never quite die, and the creative team is back for this one.

Co-creator Leigh Whannell steps back into just writing and producing this one (while making his usual on-screen appearance as Specs), with Adam Robitel handling the directorial chores. The Last Key finds Shaye’s Dr. Elise Rainier contacted by a desperate family (led by Kirk Acevedo) who are being tortured by terrifying apparitions. But when she reaches New Mexico, Elise discovers that the less-than-happy home is the one she grew up in

Over the course of the first three Insidious films, the story of Elise Rainier has come to the forefront despite the horrific events of the first movie. Next year, Elise and her fellow demonologists will uncover a hidden chapter from her past in Insidious: The Last Key. The official trailer for the fourth Insidious movie has been released, and it covers Elise’s homecoming as she discovers a supernatural threat with ties to her own past.

While Lin Shaye is reprising her role as Elise, Hana Hayes will be playing Elise as a teenager, when she encounters the skeletal apparition in her own home. Perhaps the most unsettling thing about this creature are the keys on its fingertips and its ability to turn off the screams of its victims. The keys clearly serve a purpose, but what else can they unlock? And why doesn’t the older Elise have any memory of her previous encounter?

If the first trailer for The Last Key wasn’t enough to satisfy you, the new international trailer has a few additional scares. It also serves as a more effective introduction to Kirk Acevedo’s character, the man whose family currently inhabits the home that Elise grew up in. Judging from the footage early in the trailer, the ghostly apparition is already threatening his sanity.

Kleidiphobia (the fear of keys) is one of those interesting, uncommon quirks of the brain that can make for spooky stories even though, for most people, keys aren’t very scary. If you’ve ever wondered to yourself “what might a terrifying, key-themed ghost story look like,” the Insidious franchise has you covered.

Set years before the other three Insidious installments, The Last Key seemingly hits all the same beats as its predecessors while hoping that its horrifying new ghosts who, um, shove keys into people’s bodies will scare you enough to make up for the movie’s lean budget. Lin Share returns as medium Elise in a new story set in her New Mexico hometown were her childhood home is—surprise—being haunted by a bunch of maladjusted ghosts.

In typical Insidious fashion, much of the film seems to take place in a house and feature the use of night-vision, jump scares, and eerie practical effects to make a movie that both unsettling to watch and relatively cheap to produce. Check out the first two trailer for the film below

Columbia Pictures has unleashed the teaser poster for its upcoming horror-thriller Insidious: The Last Key, in Philippine cinemas in January 2018.

The creative minds behind the hit Insidious trilogy return for Insidious: The Last Key. In the horror thriller, which welcomes back franchise standout Lin Shaye as Dr. Elise Rainier, the brilliant parapsychologist faces her most fearsome and personal haunting yet: in her own family home.

The film is written by co-creator Leigh Whannell (Saw), who wrote the trilogy and directed Chapter 3; produced by Insidious regulars Jason Blum (The Purge series, Split), Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity) and co-creator James Wan (The Conjuring, Furious 7); and directed by series newcomer Adam Robitel (The Taking of Deborah Logan).

Shaye is joined in the cast by Angus Sampson, Whannell, Josh Stewart, Caitlin Gerard, Kirk Acevedo, Javier Botet, Bruce Davison, Spencer Locke, Tessa Ferrer, Ava Kolker and Marcus Henderson.

Insidious: The Last Key is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.
